2018 Kasiruta Geological Survey & "Bacan" Gemological Research Expedition
12 Day Expedition (Open to public. Waiting list. Please contact DGL)
All Inclusive- US $840. Maximum 30 individuals. One professor to 15 individuals.
Depart Friday March 29 at 1:40 pm, nonstop on Garuda to Ternate.
Arrive at Villa Ma'RasaI Hotel in Ternate. Orientation and breakfast at the hotel. Boat to Dokoh Village, Kasiruta. Six hour (90miles) boat ride to Dokoh Village, West Kasiruta. Base Camp 1 at private residence in Dokoh.
Geological Survey- Expedition members will assist in a systematic examination of an area to determine the character, relations, distribution, and origin or mode of formation of its rock masses and mineral resources. Result will be a geologic map and model of the area under study.
Gemological research- Expedition members will collect and analyze "Bacan" and other minerals. "One of the biggest challenges of advanced gemology is the collection of samples. Far too many studies have been done on samples of unconfirmed origin. And even when the origin is known with good certainty, not enough samples were tested to clearly establish population boundaries. Having visited mines repeatedly over a period of decades, we are constantly seeing new specimens that force us to rethink our own ideas on what constitutes a "typical" stone from certain deposits. Many gemologists never get into the field and thus are forced to rely solely on second- or even third-hand reports. This can be crippling when it comes to determining origin or treatment, since it feeds already-engrained prejudices."
Depart Dokoh Village April 9 by boat and arrive Villa Ma'Rasai Hotel. Depart Friday Nov. 20 at 8:00 am, nonstop on Garuda to Jakarta. Arrive Jakarta 6:35 pm
