Syllabus

Section 1 (morning)

 An Introduction to Gemology. This section will introduce you to some of the terminology used and the fundamentals of the science.

Section 2 (morning)

Practical Gemology comes next. It focuses on how to use the instruments of gem identification. These instruments take time to master but this instruction will lay a foundation. We take one at a time and practice with them before moving on to the next one. Lecture ls interspersed with practice.

Section 3 (morning)

The properties of gemstones

Section 4 (morning)

Once we understand the properties of gemstones, we move on to the this section which explains the technical terms how the gems differ from each other. This is the last step involved in gem identification.

Section 5 (afternoon)

Up to this point we have been studying gem identification. Next comes Gemstone Grading. This information is critical to being able to properly describe and value gemstones.

Section 6 (afternoon)

Understanding and working with the reference charts.

Section 7 (afternoon)

The last section is on valuing jewelry. You have already learned how gems differ from one another, how to identify them and what properties determine their value. The actual appraising is fairly simple after one has mastered gem identification and grading.

Section 8 (afternoon)

Instructor will perform identification and evaluation on sample stones and jewelry or items volunteered by students.
